Developing a Program to Train Educational Assistants for Students with Disability

CACUSS 2004 Presentation - June 15, 2004
Shan Robertson, Mount Royal College
Bonnie Blanker, Mount Royal College

Students with disabilities face challenges in the academic setting. Provision of accommodation may “level the playing field” for some. Skilled service providers are often required in providing accommodations.

Mount Royal College has developed a process for recruiting, training and employing skilled service providers who provide services to students with disabilities in classrooms, laboratories, the library, and exam and/or workplace settings. Educational Assistants meet their responsibilities as part of the Disabilities Services team. Enhancing the interpersonal, leadership, and helping skills of the service provider, the program benefits both the service provider and students with disabilities.

Challenges and successes will be addressed.
