Events at the Canadian Museum of Nature

CROWD – There are a few gatherings happening at the Museum of Nature. We expect to see 20 to 50 attendees at the Newcomers Reception and 700 for the Opening Ceremony.

SOUND/LIGHTING – Many events will take place at the Museum of Nature on Sunday, June 11, 2017. In all spaces, low volume sounds will be featured, such as quiet music, and hosts will present greetings over commercial speaker systems. Throughout the museum, any public space including the entrance atrium and restroom lobbies, will be open to all CACUSS attendees. The spaces reserved for the CACUSS events (Rotunda and Fossil Gallery) will be primarily lit by brighter overhead lighting and featured exhibits. The outdoor patio and south-facing tent, reserved for the opening ceremony, will be receiving the evening sun.

SPACE/QUIET SPACE – Reserved for the opening ceremony are three neighbouring spaces, measuring over 10,000 square feet, of meandering room. Although the Café on the first floor closes at 4PM, tables will offer solitude for those who wish to rest, have discussions, or personal time in a quieter space. As well, the grounds outside the museum are beautiful and enjoyable to walk through.

LANGUAGE – The Museum of Nature’s way-finding signage is in French and English. All programming and way-finding signage related to the CACUSS Conference inside the museum will be in English.

ALCOHOL/BEVERAGES – There will be three cash bars set up for the events at the Museum of Nature serving beer, wine, and soft drinks. Water fountains are located throughout the museum.

FOOD/SERVICE – There is no formal dinner at the Museum of Nature; heavy passed and stationed food will be offered at each of the events. Menus at the Museum of Nature will offer vegan, vegetarian, dairy-free, gluten-free, and nut-free options. Please note that the caterer does claim that there may be traces of nuts. For life-threatening allergies, please email event.access@carleton.ca in advance of the conference to notify the CACUSS team. All food will be served buffet-style. For the opening ceremony, there will be butlered ors d’oevre service in addition to a buffet.

RESTROOMS – Gendered restrooms are located on all floors but the main floor. Each floor is accessible by elevator.

ELEVATORS – Elevators are available to every floor of the museum.

TRANSPORTATION/TERRAIN (walking, additional requirements, etc.) – A dedicated conference shuttle bus will be provided to take guests from the Shaw Centre and Carleton University to the Canadian Museum of Nature and back at the end of the evening. This venue is also accessible by OC Transpo (Route 14 from the Rideau Centre, exit at the Museum of Nature stop) and is roughly 2.5 kilometres from the Shaw Centre.

ATTENDANT CARE – Attendants will not be pre-booked for events at the Museum of Nature. Should you wish to use an attendant, fee-for-service care can be arranged by contacting event.access@carleton.ca prior to the conference.

Shaw Centre – Convention – Concurrent sessions, keynotes, nutrition breaks, lunches, etc.

CROWD – We anticipate that 1000+ people will be attending the conference.

SOUND/LIGHTING – Meeting rooms and Canada Hall feature sound dampening materials and wall panels to reduce the echoing that causes difficulties for those who are hard of hearing. During nutrition breaks/lunches/between presentations, expect chatter amongst fellow colleagues. Most common areas will be lit naturally during the day. Concurrent session and gathering spaces are lit by bright, fluorescent lights.

SPACE/QUIET SPACE – The Shaw Centre offers 192,000 square feet of space. There are multiple meeting rooms on the first and second levels that, when not in use, may provide quiet space. Room 101 on the Shaw Centre ground floor is reserved as our Multi-Faith Prayer Room. This space will be open to all attendees for use between 7AM and 5PM for the duration of the conference. Room 102 is also available as a dedicated silent room for those needing to gather their energy in a low stimulation environment.

LANGUAGE – Way-finding and programming signage as well as service at the CACUSS Conference will be in English.

ALCOHOL/BEVERAGES – Alcohol will not be served at this venue during conference programming. The exception is on Wednesday evening for the closing banquet, to be held in Canada Hall on the third floor. Hot and cold non-alcoholic beverages will be available during nutrition breaks and lunches.

FOOD/SERVICE – Each conference meal will offer vegan, vegetarian, dairy-free, gluten-free and nut-free options during morning and afternoon nutrition breaks and lunch service in Canada Hall 2. We are pleased to offer a sponsored breakfast for conference attendees on Tuesday morning as well.  Should you wish to enjoy your meals and nutrition breaks seated, tables and chairs and high top tables will be available in the adjacent ballroom, Canada Hall 3.  Please note that the Shaw Centre kitchen does have traces of nuts. Please look at the conference website for an updated menu. For life-threatening allergies, please email event.access@carleton.ca in advance of the conference to notify the CACUSS team. Food will be served buffet and for the nutrition breaks in between sessions, there will be an easy grab-and-go format.

RESTROOMS – There are gender-neutral washrooms located on the second and third floor of this venue, next to the main washrooms. There is wheelchair access to washrooms on each floor.

ELEVATORS/STAIRS – There are elevators and escalators accessible in the Colonel By Foyer (Level 1). There are two outdoor stairwells located on the north and west sides of the building. Next to the parking entrance on the east side of the Shaw Centre is another stairwell. An emergency stairwell is located directly next to the elevators in the lobby.

TRANSPORTATION/TERRAIN (walking, additional requirements, etc.) – This venue is accessible by OC Transpo (exit at the Rideau Shopping Centre or Mackenzie King Bridge stops) and is within walking distance of multiple hotels located in downtown Ottawa. There is a ramp available on the first level that accesses all floors of the building. To ensure way-finding for persons with visual impairments, there are Tactile Walking Surface Indicators (TWSI) in the exterior plaza that lead to the entrance from the crosswalks and in the main interior lobby leading to the directory.

ATTENDANT CARE – If there is a possibility that you will wish to use attendant service when at the Shaw Centre, please email event.access@carleton.ca in advance of the conference to notify the CACUSS team. Support persons are welcome and service animals are allowed in all areas of the Shaw Centre open to the public.
