Program Assistant, Black Academic Success & Engagement (BASE)

Role Profile

The BASE (Black Academic Success and Engagement) Program seeks to provide students who identify as Black, African, and Caribbean with community, resources, and support to help them fully maximize their campus experience. The BASE offers a dedicated space at both the North and Lakeshore Campuses for students to connect with one another, access resources, and build community. The Centre offers drop-in, weekly discussion groups, events, and customized resources, such as Peer Tutoring.

The Program Assistant, Black Academic Success & Engagement (BASE) is responsible for day-to-day operations of the BASE and is the primary contact for students entering the space. Specifically, the Assistant will be expected to ensure daily operations of the BASE, plan and deliver anti-oppressive programming and supports that fosters an environment within which students are able to feel safe, supported and encouraged.

The position maintains a positive learning and community space and encourages productive student interactions; contacts and networks with community agencies and individuals; builds and maintains effective working relationships with various Humber personnel and resources; assists with workshop and programming logistics. The position regularly updates the Manager on emerging issues, maintains program records and participates in Student Life initiatives when possible.

Weekly Work Schedule:
Monday 1:30 pm - 4: 30 pm;
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Work, Cultural/Diversity Studies, or a related discipline. Prior experience in post-secondary or community-based settings is an asset.

• Minimum 3 years of experience working with diverse student groups while employing a social justice and equity lens.

• Advanced knowledge of anti-oppression education, anti-Black racism, and their relationship to the educational system, with particular focus on the educational realities of Black, African, and Caribbean students.
• Extensive knowledge of the historical context which shapes the current contexts of Black, African, and Caribbean students.
• Excellent life/career coaching skills including well-developed community-based networking abilities.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, presentation, and facilitation (individual and small groups) skills
• Excellent data and time management skills
• Excellent skills in MS Outlook, Word & Excel, and utilizing the Internet for research and marketing purposes.
