Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts) is looking for an energetic and innovative Student Academic Advisor to provide guidance to current and prospective students at AUArts by assisting learners with making informed decisions towards attaining their educational goals.

This is a permanent full-time position starting as soon as possible. Hours of work are 35 hours per week.

Reporting to the Manager, Student Life & Wellness, the Student Academic Advisor provides holistic, strengths-based advising and pro-active coaching to students on their academic progression by providing a wide range of advisory services and promoting resources and information related to student success, persistence, and oversees group success strategies programming (Student Success Cafes, Wellness Advocacy, Orientation, Peer Mentoring) to foster healthy and active student life. The Advisor provides guidance on university and post-baccalaureate opportunities throughout the student life cycle, from newly admitted through to graduation. The Advisor works with a diverse community of students including those entering university directly from high school, transfer students, mature students, students from diverse backgrounds, and international students, demonstrating consideration for diversity, equity and inclusion of all.

Key Responsibilities:

• Advises students, in group and individual settings, through coaching regarding academic programs, admission requirements to majors, program progression requirements and graduation requirements in accordance with established policy.
• Engages and supports students in the learning process and encourages them to take increased responsibility for their academic progress and success and in the development of personal educational plans consistent with their interests and resources.
• Leads programs that facilitates student success strategies and a culture of active learning.
• Mentors students in student life advocacy initiatives to promote holistic learning approaches.
• Encourages and supports student success by identifying student needs and making appropriate referrals to university departments, partners, such as SAIT, and to government and community services.
• Develops and implements activities, events, workshops, related training, and initiatives for the academic advising program, including evaluation of the effectiveness of each.
• Reports on academic progress and performance, inclusive of attrition and retention analysis.
• Throughout the student life-cycle, the Advisor provides updated resources and advisement that supports lifelong learning. The Advisor supports and integrates cultural awareness through artistic enquiry in just-in-time advising sessions as well as developing programming specific to art students.

The successful candidate will have:

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required.
• Minimum 2 years’ related experience in a post-secondary environment is required.
• Demonstrated experience advising international students.
• Demonstrated experience working with a Student Information System (SIS) e.g., Banner.
• Demonstrated understanding of adult learning theory and experience with student development programming.
• Proficient or fluent in multiple language(s) is preferred.
• Training in diversity and/or intercultural communications is preferred.
• Training or certification in coaching, mentoring and/or advising is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
• Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively and maintain strong relationships with internal and external partners.
• Possess flexibility and adaptability skills in a changing environment.
• Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to multi-task while under pressure to meet deadlines.
• Ability to collect data, analyze and problem solve.
• Ability to accurately perform detailed work and maintain confidentiality and discretion.

As a member of the AUPE bargaining unit (Local 071/006), this full-time permanent position falls under a classification 6 (six). The starting annual salary is $55,908 – $62,001 dependent upon skills, education and experience.
