Sexual and Gender Diversity Advisor
The department of Student Experience is committed to supporting all students at the University of Guelph. Student Experience houses many specialized supports for students identifying as First Nations, Métis, Inuit, Black, racialized, people of colour, members of the LGBTQ2IA+ community, and members of various cultural, international, religious, and spiritual communities. Reporting to the Director, Student Experience, the Sexual and Gender Diversity Advisor is a strategically important position for LGBTQ2IA+ students (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Two-Spirit, Intersex, Asexual, and other identities that fall outside of cisgender heterosexual paradigms).
Through individual and group-based advisement and support, mentoring, coaching, student advocacy, social, and cultural programs, the Advisor supports the holistic development of LGBTQ2IA+ students. The Advisor maintains expertise in supporting students working through all forms of discrimination, oppression, homophobia, cissexism, heterosexism, transphobia, queerphobia, internalized homophobia, and mental health challenges, and makes referrals to support services both on and off campus as appropriate.
The Advisor designs, delivers, and assesses a range of educational workshops, presentations, seminars and training activities for professional staff, LGBTQ2IA+ students, and student staff, and the general student population on topics spanning identity development through to various dimensions of the student experience for LGBTQ2IA+. Represents the department at a range of institutional events, committees, and programs to provide expertise pertaining to the lived experiences of LGBTQ2IA+ students.
The Advisor acts as a lead for campus collaborations and liaises regularly with individuals, groups, faculty, staff, and departments across campus and off-campus organizations to develop a robust infrastructure to support LGBTQ2IA+ student success and retention. Acts as a consultant and advisor on campus policy and procedures which play a role in fostering inclusion for LGBTQ2IA+ students.
Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises a team of approximately 4 student staff, 4 Peer Helpers, and approximately 14 OUTline volunteers who in turn provide direct service and support to students.
The incumbent contributes to the strategic direction and day-to-day operations of Student Experience and the Sexual and Gender Diversity office, including participation in the development and implementation of actions plans, annual budgeting, and forecasting processes for the unit.
To be successful in this role the incumbent is required to have:
· A Master’s degree in social justice, counselling, higher education, social work, or related field coupled with a minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience working with LGBTQ2IA+ communities.
· Understanding of the complexity of student identity and education experiences, particularly the experiences of LGBTQ2IA+ students in higher education.
· Expertise and practical experience in supporting individuals working through all forms of discrimination, oppression, homophobia, transphobia, queerphobia, cissexism, heterosexism, internalized homophobia, and mental health challenges.
· Experience advocating on behalf of individuals who have experienced discrimination, homophobia, or transphobia.
· Experience with interpreting and explaining a broad range of policies and protocols
· Demonstrated skills in advising those in positions of authority regarding matters that impact the LGBTQ2IA+ student experience.
· Proven ability to assess needs and to research, design, implement, and evaluate programming, including educational and training programs and curricula.
· Proven ability to exercise a high level of judgement, diplomacy, and tact.
· Proven ability to respect and maintain confidentiality in sensitive and/or volatile situations
· Experience communicating with and supporting students who may be distressed, distraught, or in crisis.
· Practical experience in the supervision and training of student staff and/or volunteers.
· Strong interpersonal and intercultural skills, with evidence of successfully building and strengthening relationships and partnerships.
· A strong aptitude in written, verbal, and non-verbal communication.
· Intermediate level Microsoft 365, including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.
