The Fisheries and Marine Institute (Marine Institute) - a campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland - is one of the world’s most respected centres for marine learning and applied research. With oceans intrinsic to the culture and economic heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Marine Institute is integrally linked to the province’s marine and maritime identity. It is critical that the Marine Institute continue to play a leadership role in applied oceans education, research, and training and deliver academic programming that is accessible, relevant and industry driven. It is within this context that the Marine Institute seeks a dynamic, student-centric, and collegial Associate Vice-President (Academic and Student Affairs) to further strengthen its academic reputation and expertise across the oceans sector.

Reporting directly to the Vice-President (Marine Institute), the AVP is a member of the senior executive team, responsible for academics, research and development, maintaining high quality undergraduate and graduate programs, supporting the research enterprise, promoting student success, and fostering a positive student experience through the student life cycle, from enrolment management and admissions to graduation. In addition to the three academic schools and their research and training centres, the AVP leads the Institute’s Office of the Registrar, the Dr. C.R. Barrett Library, Wellness and Recreation Services, and the Academic and Student Affairs office. The AVP provides strategic direction to a diverse team of researchers, faculty, and staff, and collaborates with the Marine Institute’s Executive Committee, the Associate Vice-President (Research and Strategic Partnerships), and the Student Union and Graduate Society, in providing support for faculty, staff, and students to develop as scholars, as well as with senior leaders and academic administrators at Memorial University.

The AVP will hold an earned research-based doctorate and significant administrative experience gained in a post-secondary environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and knowledge of university management and academic governance. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence and innovation in teaching and learning, research and scholarship, and enhancing the quality of the student experience; possess a collegial and inclusive leadership style; the ability to motivate and inspire others around a shared vision; an abiding commitment to Indigenization, equity, diversity, and inclusion; and excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills.

The appointment, which is renewable, is for five years and is to take effect at the earliest mutually agreeable opportunity.
