What responsibilities will you have in this role?
- Reporting to the Office of the Vice President Academic, the Director of Indigenous Initiatives is responsible for creating and executing a strategic plan, as well as overseeing the operation of the Office of Indigenous Initiatives with a view to creating and promoting an inclusive environment that positions the College as a leader in Indigenous education and services.
- Create an authentic Indigenous strategy, to position the College as a leader in Indigenous education and services.
Provide pivotal strategic leadership in the development and delivery of programs and services that support the success of all Indigenous students.
- Lead the College in its journey to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action and the CICAN Indigenous Education Protocols.
- Work closely with Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, organizations, associations, government funding agencies and departments to maintain and develop effective partnerships and agreements including new funding opportunities.
- Act as a subject matter expert to all areas of the college regarding Indigenous culture and ways of knowing.
- Identify the barriers faced by Indigenous students and employees as well as strategies to remove systemic barriers that prevent students from accessing programs and services.
- Act as a trusted and knowledgeable advisor, resource and proactive catalyst to advance strategies for Indigenous inclusion and equity for employees, students and community members.
- Act as an advisor and provide leadership for the College collaboratively with our students, staff, the College’s Indigenous Education Council and senior leadership (Vice Presidents, President and Board of Governors).
- Manage Indigenous Education and Services at the College including staffing, counselling services, events, and dedicated spaces to assist the College in meeting our commitments.
- Work in collaboration with various stakeholders to support the work of the college to develop and reform curriculum and teaching practices aligned to the College’s diversity and respect initiatives, particularly in relation to TRC and anti-racism.
-Regular travel to each of the campuses.
What qualifications do you need for this role?
- Must be of Indigenous ancestry (i.e., Turtle Island - First Nations Status and non-Status, Métis, or Inuit).
- Master’s degree in Indigenous Studies, Education or related field, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
- 5 years’ experience working at a senior managerial level in an Indigenous-focused role.
- Demonstrable experience working and/or understanding of Indigenous communities, both rural and urban.
- Advanced understanding of historical and contemporary Indigenous ways of knowing.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively lead a team and manage financial resources.
- Strong collaborative skills for engaging, working closely, and demonstrating the ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders to develop and fulfill the Indigenous strategy.
- Experience interacting with Provincial and Federal agencies is an asset.
- Understanding of an Indigenous language and an understanding of the Ontario College system would be an asset.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills that are appropriate and respectful of the audience.
- Demonstrated leadership in delivering excellent service to others as this is key in supporting the success of our students and our College.
- Effective ability to interact with others collaboratively and deal with situations in ways that respect diverse backgrounds, experience and styles.
- Flexibility in adapting to change and in participating in consultative decision-making processes.
