The Dean of Students (DoS), within the broader Vice President Student Success portfolio and in close partnership with the Registrar (Enrolment Services), is responsible for overseeing the creation of conditions for students’ personal, academic, social, and career success as they transition in, through, out, beyond, and (sometimes) back to Centennial College. As a result, the DoS plays a substantive role in realizing the College’s vision of transforming lives through learning and mission to prepare students for career success.
The DoS is a strong educator, leader, and administrator (grounded in principles of social justice, global citizenship, equity, system and strategic thinking, care and community, and holistic student learning and development) with responsibilities for (a) leadership and strategic planning (the student experience, student learning and development, and student success); (b) strategic enrolment management: student success; (c) student conduct and risk mitigation; (d) resource stewardship: fiscal, physical, and human resources; (e) collaborative partnerships and professional networks, both internal and external; and (f) student advocacy.
The DoS engages, manages, and inspires adept student affairs and services professionals, within the Student Life, Engagement, and Development (SLED) portfolio, in pursuit of the College’s vision and mission. The SLED portfolio includes: Career Services and Cooperative Education; the Office of Student Life; Student Experience and Ethics Office (Satisfaction, Conduct, Mediation, Ombuds, etc.); Centennial Advising and Pathways Services (CAPS); Athletics and Recreation; Student Residence (liaison); Student Government (liaison); the Centre for Accessible Learning and Counselling Services (CALCS); and Co-Curricular Student Learning and Development (Student Mentoring, Advocacy, and Leadership). In addition, the DoS ensures synergistic relationships and aligned programming between the SLED team and Services and Global Experiences (SaGE) for international students.
Bridging both student and academic affairs, the DoS, with their partner in the Academic area (the AVP Learning Innovation, Teaching Excellence, and Academic Quality), provides leadership and relevant insights for two defining Centres of Excellence at the College: Centennial Advising and Pathways Services and the Place of Reconciliation for All Our Relations – each with accompanying strategic mandates.
Centennial students bring a wealth of strengths as foundations for success, having navigated a socioeconomic terrain that pose significant barriers for minoritized and historically disadvantaged populations. Our students’ rich identities include the following:

As a senior advocate for Centennial students, resonance with lived experiences matters and representation within the senior leadership team matters. Priority consideration will be given to applicants who meet the minimum educational and experiential qualifications – and who additionally are able to bring that lived experience to the portfolio. With this context in mind, please note that a "Reflections on Lived Experiences" document is required as part of the application process (see full submission requirements below).
• Facilitates the best possible experience for students’ (a) personal, academic, and social development, (b) sense of belonging, and (c) overall satisfaction through their people and be that advocate and enabler for change and empowerment.
• Shapes the development of the broader College strategic plans (Book of Commitments, Strategic Mandate Agreement, 3E Framework, etc.) and provides connection to, and oversight of, deliverables within the SLED portfolio.
• Provides vision, leadership, direction (through meaningful engagement), advocacy, and operational management with respect to the student experience, student learning and development, student persistence and retention, and student personal and academic success though identification, design, and delivery of programs and services within a complex portfolio delivered by a diverse and professional team within SLED.
• Guides policy creation and program management in varsity and recreational athletics, accessible learning obligations, behavioural discipline, conflict resolution, due process and natural justice, and health and counselling services, including health awareness programs, personal/psychological counselling, tragic event response, ongoing student crisis support, and case management.
• Leads research and assessment projects to evaluate the effectiveness of, and satisfaction with, college programs, opportunities, services and approaches, and the student experience/satisfaction in order to inform practice, policy, and planning within the institution – and to demonstrate the effective and efficient use of fiscal and human resources.
• Serves as the subject matter expert to inform conversations, committee decisions, and policy directions for student success at a variety of college forums; as a result, maintains currency (research, teaching, presenting, etc.) with respect to student success literature (primary research, effective practices, professional standards, institutional data, etc.) and student experiences.
• Coordinates the co-curricular learning framework/curricular-map for the College across partner areas (Global Citizenship, Equity, and Inclusion; Centennial College Students’ Association; Services and Global Experiences; Residence Life; and SLED) and ensures connection to academic learning outcomes.
• Serves as the retention (progression and persistence) lead for the School Local Retention Team planning (as connected to CAPS) by cultivating appropriate data for School Local Retention Teams and reviewing Local Retention Team plans to assess efficacy and possible partnerships across Schools and Administrative areas.
• Ensures students are accorded fair and due process (i.e., procedural fairness) in relation to their concern, consistent with tenets of procedural fairness (natural justice), as experience and navigate processes under College behavioural policies and procedures.
• Develops the human resource capacity necessary to deliver services through the selection and development of staff and design of organizational structures; fosters a collaborative culture and empowerment within direct leadership team and across the portfolio.
• A Master’s Degree in Sociology, Psychology, Higher Education and Policy, or Student Development (to serve as institutional subject-matter expert on the student experience); or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ten (10) years’ relevant leadership experience, including demonstrated success in a student success environment, preferably with direct experience in advising (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
In addition, it is essential that the candidate possess the following:
• Demonstrated experience developing strategic business and operational plans at the divisional AND corporate/institutional levels in relative to student development, engagement, retention, success, satisfaction, and well-being
• Strong working knowledge of most key aspects of post-secondary delivery, including both service and academic delivery
• Demonstrated ability to set objectives and associated metrics within a framework of Strategic Enrolment Management (SEM), and deliver programming/activities in response (e.g., persistence/retention)
• Excellent communication (both written and verbal), facilitation, and collaboration skills with diverse audiences, ranging from students, families, and professional networks to staff, administration, and faculty
• Broad leadership skills including a visionary, detail-oriented, agile, and highly collaborative work servant leadership style, and the ability to strategically facilitate change and incorporate innovative practices into the organization
• Understanding of principles of diversity and social justice, with the ability to enhance equity and inclusive communities with students and staff of various social, cultural, and educational backgrounds
• Is student-focused, genuinely cares about students and believes in students’ abilities to engage with campus leaders as full partners, attends student events as appropriate, and maintains a style and office that is open and approachable
• Pro-active, evidence based, solution focussed, innovative, flexible, adaptable, open to change
• Excellent analytical skills with the ability to define objectives and innovatively identify alternatives and solutions
• Has strong professional networks and is involved with organizations/associations to keep pace with trends and best practices
• Experience and/or training in outcome-based program/service planning and evaluation
• Significant involvement to research techniques and analysis to inform decision making
