Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director, Accessible Learning Services (ALS), the incumbent is responsible for providing leadership, regular consultation, supervision and direction to staff working in Accessible Learning Services. The position is accountable for ensuring the institution meets all legal, ethical, and human rights requirements when providing academic and placement related accommodations and accessibility supports to students. The position will work closely with Seneca College Academic departments to ensure understanding around reasonable academic accommodation for students and help to resolve conflicts that may arise. The incumbent will continue to develop mechanisms to educate the community regarding the unique strengths brought to campus by students with disabilities. The incumbent will work with provincial and national colleagues to further communication with government around what systemic issues and barriers exist to the success of all our students.

Responsibilities:
Leadership
• Responsible for selection, training, supervision, professional development, and performance management of staff providing accessibility services in the department.
• Determine service priorities for the department, including appropriate staffing levels at all times of the year and making adjustments as required.
• Ensure all requirements to servicing students at all campuses are met
• Responsible for ensuring the effective and appropriate management of the Bursary for Students with Disabilities.
• Research, assess and implement initial accommodation process to ensure the utmost efficiency and timeliness of service to students.
• Research the efficacy of workshops, seminars, and training for students related to assistive technology, learning strategies and management of their academic accommodations.

Departmental Operations
• Manage relationship with external database provider, ensuring that accuracy and confidentiality of student files is maintained, and ensures that departmental processes meet all legal requirements.
• Effectively collect, analyze and present statistics that help the department and institution implement effective programs, resources and supports for students with disabilities., including identifying systemic barriers and obstacles that need to be addressed.
• Manage a number of departmental budgets, including revenue generation and expense forecasting over multiple budget cycles.
• Develop a strategic plan for the operation within the context of student population growth and multiple campus environments.
• Work with colleagues to create pathways for students to easily access other services on campus, especially counselling, learning and health services.
• Work with the Director of ALS to determine and implement departmental priorities consistent with divisional and college directions.

Internal/ External Relations
• Liaise with relevant government ministries to advocate for resources. Complete Year End Report required for accountability in relation to over $1 million of annual grant revenue.
• Provide advice and guidance to the College on all issues pertaining to legal liability and human rights issues or requirements within the context of the provision of accessible learning opportunities.
• Work with the Centre for Teaching and Learning to provide support to faculty around best practices for working with students with disabilities.
• Liaise with a variety of departments and staff on deliverables related to the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and to develop partnerships in program and service delivery.
• Participate in the development and delivery of College-wide educational initiatives, specifically around accessible learning resources and creating a community of care.

Crisis Response and Management
• Participate in the implementation of strategies to support students with mental illness to be successful academically.
• Engage in the development of College-wide educational initiatives to help the community better support students who may be ‘at-risk’.
• Advise on the College’s processes for supporting students who display concerning behaviour.
• Provide guidance on critical incident management processes.
• Consult college partners on issues related to Ontario Human Rights, risk management of students displaying threatening behaviour to self or others, as well as providing expert opinion when the college is being challenged around accommodating specific requests by students.

Qualifications:
Education
• A minimum of a completed Masters Degree in Disability Studies, Social Work, Counselling or Education. If in another field of study, state how the education is related.
• Regulated Health Professional in good standing is an asset.Experience
• A minimum of five (5) years of progressive management experience in a post-secondary unionized environment with the direct provision of academic support to students with disabilities.
Skills
• Demonstrated knowledge of dealing with legal and human rights challenges in a post-secondary environment.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with a diverse student and staff population.
• Proven ability to develop innovative solutions and processes.
