Applications are invited for full-time Indigenous Counsellor in the Health, Wellness & Accessibility Services department. This position will commence August 1, 2022.

Reporting to the Associate Director, Health, Wellness & Accessibility Services, the Indigenous Counsellor will respond to the specialized mental health needs of Indigenous students as well as non-Indigenous students. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the delivery of clinical mental health assessments, counselling intervention and case management to a diverse student population (including full time, part time, international students, students with disabilities and non-traditional student populations) with particular emphasis on Indigenous students. Adhering to ethical standards and practices as well as relevant legislation; the Indigenous Counsellor provides individualized personal counselling, resources and mental health programming related to Indigenous culture that encourages student development and retention. Employing strong case management skills in order to identify, assess, assist and monitor students at risk; the Indigenous Counsellor will use Traditional wellness teachings and facilitate Traditional Healing Ceremonies. The Indigenous Counsellor works closely with the Indigenous Education department, consults regularly with colleagues and works co-operatively with students, teaching faculty, staff and administration towards achieving College objectives. The Indigenous Counsellor provides culturally appropriate services and assists Student Services, including Health, Wellness and Accessibility Services, to increase their capacity to effectively support Indigenous students.

Required qualifications include;

• Masters level degree in Applied Psychology (Counselling, Rehabilitation) or Social Work.
• Registration as a Regulated Healthcare Professional.
• A minimum of 5 years’ employment experience delivering solution focused counselling, crisis intervention and case management services
• Demonstrated experience providing counselling/mental health/crisis services
• The incumbent must be of Indigenous heritage (i.e., Turtle Island – First Nations Status and non-Status, Métis or Inuit) and have strong ties to Indigenous community
• Candidate must have experience working with Indigenous students or clients
• Experience in delivering culturally appropriate services to Indigenous clients or students
• Excellent written/oral communication, organizational, problem solving, analytical and teamwork skills
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications (Power point, Excel, Word) experience with Blackboard and People Soft are assets
