Working collaboratively with the Black Student Advising Centre, provide information and resources to students of African Decent attending Dalhousie. Offer academic guidance, advice and support specifically to African-Nova Scotian, African-Canadian and African students at Dalhousie.
Assist all students in the development of an educational plan, and in clarifying their career, and academic goals.
Facilitate the development, implementation and assessment of programs and services that promote student learning, development and retention.
Enhance students’ awareness of available educational and career resources (such as honours programs, tutoring, co-op programs, study abroad, other experiential learning opportunities including volunteering or part-time employment) and make appropriate and purposeful referrals.
Monitor student caseload; analyze data, ensure proactive and intrusive follow up, propose process improvement opportunities; submit reports and ensure accurate data collection.
Establish rapport with students, groups, colleagues, and others that acknowledge differences in lived experiences.
Note: Hours may fluctuate based on student demand. Ability to work a flexible schedule including days, evenings, and some weekend assignments will be required.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a related field with three to five years’ experience working with students in a post-secondary setting. Previous experience in academic and career exploration is required; experience in program planning, assessment and/or event planning will be considered an asset. Candidates must also possess strong written and oral communication skills. Due to the student population this position will primarily advise, the successful candidate must identify as African Nova Scotian/Canadian.
