By attending the 2022 virtual Student Conduct Institute, participants will engage in an intensive five half-day program focused on developing skills and enhancing knowledge. An emphasis will be placed on applying fundamental skills related to student conduct investigations and adjudication, while gaining a deeper understanding of contextual factors related to the practice of student conduct administration, including procedural fairness, and the various resolution pathways. Throughout the institute, there will also be opportunities for conduct professionals to share experiences, explore current issues in the field, and learn about the impact of their work on post-secondary campuses.
As a result of attending this institute participants will be able to:
- Apply fundamental skills related to student conduct investigations and adjudication,
- Differentiate an administrative law process from civil or criminal processes
- Identify the various formal and informal resolution pathways available within a student conduct practice (SCP)
- List guiding documents and influential bodies that contribute to student conduct research and emerging practices
- Differentiate applicable policies, procedures and the responsibilities thereof
- Recognize the purpose of threat assessment, behavioural intervention teams and case management within SCPs
- Identify how to ensure SCP are welcoming, equitable, accessible and inclusive
- Discuss 3 emerging topics in student conduct administration
- Examine due process as it applies to student conduct administration and procedural fairness,
- Use procedural fairness when managing an incident
- Recognize one's own bias, skills, and conflict of interest that may affect process
- Differentiate between various approaches/pathways of student conduct administration,
- Identify the investigative scope of an incident
- Use gathered information to develop appropriate questions to pose sequentially during an investigation
- Determine the role and sequencing of the witness within the student conduct process
- Describe the role of advocates, representatives and supports within the student conduct process.
- Evaluate information based on the balance of probabilities and defend findings
- Formulate effective learning strategies for students involved in the student conduct process
- Summarize investigative process and adjudication
- Select assessment strategies within student conduct administration
- List the steps of an appeal proceeding and examine the various appeal hearing models
- Describe the process to approach complex cases,
- Arrange the incident management process within a student conduct process
- Determine when aggravating factors may be present within the student conduct process
- Identify appropriate considerations in an investigation with a trauma informed lens
- Identify skills to manage their own self-care and mitigate compassion fatigue and secondary trauma.
- Understand institutional responsibilities to support those working within student conduct programs
- Recognize the importance of collective care, self-care strategies and stress management skills
With experience in both the university and college post-secondary sector, Lara has become a recognized professional working in student conduct administration since graduating from the University of Guelph in 2002. Prior to starting her own consulting work, she worked at five post-secondary institutions, most recently, Mohawk College as the Director, Student Rights & Responsibilities Office and Humber College as the Manager for the Office of Student Conduct. Lara is regarded among her peers for her understanding of the practice and procedural fairness. She has served as the primary investigator for incidences of sexual violence, and has had oversight for the behavioural intervention teams, sexual violence taskforces and sexual violence prevention initiatives.
Lara has been an asset in building a strong community of student conduct practitioners in Canada and has served as a Co-Chair, Student Conduct Community of Practice (CoP) with the Canadian Association of College & University Student Services (CACUSS) for several years. Lara continues to facilitate training workshops, serve as a guest speaker, contribute to various publications, and also curates a social media platform for CACUSS members.
But let’s be real….none of that is exciting. More importantly, Lara considers herself a professional ‘12’ for the Seattle Seahawks. Between, her Sunday football routine, game day outfits and snacks, she’s got fanning down to an art. In the summer months, you’ll find her designing vegetable gardens. She loves a good conversation on how to grow the perfect legume!
Kristin Lennan (she/her/hers)
Kristin is a passionate student affairs professional with over 14 years of experience. She currently works as the Acting Associated Director, Residence Life at the University of Guelph and has held a myriad of positions in Residence Life and Student Affairs at several other institutions.
Kristin has played a pivotal role in the growth of the conduct process in residence at Guelph. She has extensive training in case adjudication, investigations, conflict mediation, restorative justice, and threat assessment practices. She has developed and facilitated workshops for staff and faculty on campus on student conduct practices, chaired behaviour intervention and threat assessment teams, and acted as a key player in managing the follow-up and resolution of student behaviour issues.
Kristin has specific interest in the relationship between student conduct and behaviour management process and human resource functions with employee conduct in the workplace. She is passionate about perceptions of fairness in conduct processes, the disproportional impact that policies/procedures can have on BIPOC communities, and doing what is right, not what is easy. She believes that student conduct can be a truly transformational experience for students and administrators when approached from a respectful and compassionate place.
Outside of work, Kristin is an avid soccer player and backpacker (pre-covid) with a thrill for adventure. During covid times, she has found refuge in home workouts, bingeing Netflix, gardening, and fixing up her house.
Nicky (she/her/hers) currently serves as the Manager of Student Conduct at the University of British Columbia. Once a theatre student by trade, Nicky enjoys finding a way to balance her research and performance experience with student conduct, student development, and identity theory. She earned her Bachelor and Master degrees in Drama, Dramaturgy, and Dramatic Criticism from the University of Alberta, a Certificate in Law at Queen’s University, and is currently a doctoral student in the EdD program at the University of British Columbia. Her experience in higher education includes: sessional theatre and performance faculty at the University of Alberta and the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz Germany, a Residence Life Coordinator at MacEwan University, and both the Coordinator and Manager, Residence Conduct at Queen’s University. Nicky is also a safeTALK facilitator, a Responding with Respect Instructor, and a Resilient Minds Instructor Trainer with the Canadian Mental Health Association.
