Dr. Mitchell's biography:
My family moved to Canada from Northern Ireland in 1968 and we ended up settling in Kamloops in 1970. My father worked as a general surgeon at the Royal Inland Hospital and I grew up in lower Sahali. I went to Beattie Elementary, Sahali Junior and then Kamloops Senior Secondary, graduating in 1982.
I left Kamloops then for a bachelor of science degree in pharmacology at the University of British Columbia, followed by medical school at McGill. I completed a specialty training program in Emergency Medicine at McMaster University and then began working at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver. I worked for 8 years at St. Paul’s, interrupted by two years working at the Shaikh Khalifa Medical Center in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. After returning from Abu Dhabi, I met my wife Erin in Vancouver and we returned to Kamloops to raise our family.
I now live a few blocks from where my family first set down roots and live with my wife, two children, and a small ecosystem of pets.
I still work predominantly as an emergency physician at the Royal Inland Hospital, with a number of other activities. I am the Site Scholar for the Kamloops Family Medicine Residency Program, teaching doctors in training about how to interpret and conduct research. I am a coinvestigator in a triple blind randomized clinical trial on the effects of cannabis on PTSD at UBC Okanagan. I see patients in consultation for medical cannabis through the Medical Cannabis Resource Center at 929 Laval Crescent. I am on the editorial board and a contributing author for Using Medical Cannabis.
