Choose your own post-secondary adventure! your story begins in the Higher Education Jungle, where you are a student navigating your academic journey. What barriers will you encounter? Will you seek help? Will you find the tools to succeed? What do you consider a successful adventure?
Using the findings of MRU's research study to measure outcomes o students with disabilities we will seek to understand the ongoing successes and chalenges faced in the Higher Education Jungle. Using data from Accessibility Services' student database, MRU student records, NSSE and CUSC campus-wide surveys, and focus groups, the research team set out to explore factors related to student success. These include GPA, withdrawal rates, student satisfaction, retenion, graduation rates utilization of student services, and students' definitions of success compared to the general student population. Key research questions included: what impact does Accessibility Services have on student oucomes? What impact does disability have on student outcomes? Results indcated that while Accessibility Services has a positive influence, it does not result in equal outcomes. Students with disabilities have different definitions of success, experience stigma and discrimination, face additional barriers to maintainng health/balance, and challenges related to belonging and peer interactions.
Given these results, we are inspired to choose a new adventurous way to meet the needs of students with disability-related challenges. how should we support their success in the Higher Education Jungle? What is the role of student services professionals in addressing issuresof stigma, discrimination, belonging, balance, health and wellness? Does higher education need to be a barrier and challenge filled jungle?
